As far as we’re concerned, few pieces of clothing are as universally flattering and useful as a tunic top. There are style options galore, they can be dressed up or down, and they pair with almost every single pant style in your closet.

We like them for work, weekends, travel and evening. We like them in silk, and we like them in cotton or linen. Solid colors? Sure. Stripes? Yes. Prints? Absolutely.

If you already own one, you could probably add another one (or more!) to your closet, and if for some reason you do not have a tunic in your arsenal, stop whatever you’re doing and start shopping RIGHT NOW.

Six to Sunday Tips:

  • Get the fit right: Make sure the tunic falls below your widest point (hips, thighs) but not right at it (which will create an eye-catching horizontal line). If you’re tall, choose a longer tunic to hit the right place on your frame. If you’re petite, be careful not to get swallowed up in oversized styles.
  • Details to look for: This is a covered-up look, so we love an open, notched collar to let the neckline show. Versions with contrasting trim or beading look especially nice for work or evening.
  • Styling tips: Tunics are best with pants (no skirts), and to that end, we like skinny, straight-leg, or slightly flared styles best. If you want to rock a slim wide leg, we co-sign (!); just make sure they hit at the ankle—that sliver of skin on your leg will break up the fabric on top and bottom.
