We LOVE it when our community (yes YOU!) asks us to hunt down a pretty piece. In our Friday Instagram stories, we featured a photo of a gray, cotton blend, cropped boxy jacket, and we were asked the question: “Where can I find something like that?”
Unfortunately, the adorable coat is from Janne Mill, a European-based designer who only ships in Europe.
So we set out to find some alternate options and looked for lightweight coats in a boxy shape, slightly cropped, with soft shoulders. To keep it interesting, we sourced a range of fabrics, colors, and styles.
We think the boxy spring jacket is a winner: It’s easy to wear, it works on most shapes and sizes (especially the shorties out there!), and it’s a perfect topper to transition into the warmer months.
Banana Republic. A great minimalist option with just enough detail (banded collar, single button closure, center back seam) to make it interesting. Unlined, this is a great lightweight layering option for spring.
Zara. Made in a linen blend, this one will take you into summer. It’s the perfect crop length and we adore the turned-up cuffs.
Gap. For a more relaxed, comfortable take, this jacket is perfect. The straight silhouette with a slightly cropped length makes for an incredibly flattering shape, and its simplicity elevates the look. Comes in black and white.
M.M. LaFleur. Taking a gamble on a final sale can be nerve-wracking, but when it comes to this shape (loose fitting) and this material (two-way stretch cotton), we can get behind it. A fantastic pick for petites and we love the idea of pairing this with any high-waisted pants or jeans, or with a maxi skirt or dress.
Alo. Looking for a cozy topper? Check out this French Terry option. We like how the relaxed dropped shoulders offset the more structured elements (boxy fit, collar, front pockets), making an athleisure selection all of a sudden feel like it should be worn outside the house.
Tentree. For women in cooler climates where the weather takes a while to turn or for those who love a great postseason sale, this classic wool jacket checks all the boxes. Soft? Yep. Warm? You bet. Sustainable? Absolutely.
J.Crew. This pick is a new take on the classic Barbour jacket. We love the cropped (at the hip) length, we’re mad for the drawcord hem. Bonus: it’s size-inclusive.
Banana Republic. It’s cotton denim, but instead of standard blue, it’s done in on-trend ecru. The contrast stitching and four flat pockets give it oomph; ditto the soft shoulders and slightly blouson sleeves.
