Sometimes a style hits stores in a big way, and upon closer look, you realize you’ve seen it coming for a while. It’s vaguely familiar, but it is by all accounts different. Case in point: this season’s cargo pants.
They’re more embellished than their predecessors and they feature a wider leg, which we love for all types of figure flattery. The industry is calling them “exaggerated utility,” and we’d say that’s pretty accurate.
Today’s cargo selections are done in lots of fabrications, from super casual cotton canvas to swanky silky versions and in varying degrees of exaggeration.
In the spirit of keeping your look up to date, we deem these worth a try. Here’s our “it” list.
Running errands and meeting a friend for coffee? WFH followed by a lunch date? Here’s a new way to look cool and casual.
Pants: American Eagle ($69.95) or Plus Eloquii ($99.95)
Tee: Polo Ralph Lauren ($90) or Plus ASOS DESIGN ($11.50)
Button Up: Old Navy ($39.99) or Plus Old Navy ($39.99)
Sneakers: Thursday Boots ($129)
Bracelet: Bauble Bar ($50)
Belt Bag: Senreve ($495) or Anthropologie ($78)
Blush: Westman Atelier ($48)
Zara
If a cargo pant married a chino, this would be their baby. With front pockets AND side pockets, curvy gals beware.
American Eagle
High-waisted, with stretch baked into the fabric to hug your curves in all the right places. The side pockets are flat against the body, which makes for less bulk. Available in short, standard, and long.
Aqua
These pants give the illusion of thigh pockets, thanks to gentle ruching at the knees. It’s a softer look and is less bulky. The ankle ties can be cinched a little or a lot.
Mango
The side pocket details are placed lower on the leg, so they’re thigh flattering. Six to Sunday tried & tested these and found they stretched out with wear, so consider sizing down.
NSF
The cropped length is great for shorties.
Whether you want an alternative to your sleek, black work trousers or you’re looking for an updated date night look, one of these might just be the answer.
Pants: Lauren Ralph Lauren ($175)
Tank: Banana Republic ($12)
Sweater: COS ($120) or Plus Sanctuary ($99)
Shoe: Cult Gaia ($458)
Earrings: Banana Republic ($21)
Bag: S.Joon ($611) or Betsy & Floss ($92)
Face Cream: Kiehl’s ($38)
Nasty Gal
The wide leg coupled with a little waist pleating makes these ideal for curvy frames.
Banana Republic
The leg is ever so tapered, so it won’t overwhelm a small frame. Offered in petite, standard, and tall.
Eloquii
The trouser waist closure is dressy and polished, and the slightly cropped length and elasticized cuffs are great for those with shorter legs.
Manière Devoir
The most style-forward of our picks, these make a statement. With a heavier fabrication and 3D pockets galore, you’ll need a bit of height to pull these off.
Lauren Ralph Lauren
Extra wide waistband accentuates a whittled middle, and gold accents dress them up.
Theory
Made from stretch twill (the Spandex is built in), these allow for hips and curves. The details are subdued, so they’re more profesh. This could be a new work look.
Tibi
With side pockets, soft pleats, and short-waisted, the proportions on these beauties accommodate petites.
