Yes, You Can Wear Sequins

Adding some sparkle is always a good idea, whether you’re going to an office party, dinner with friends, a cocktail party, or having a girls' night out.

Tis the season for glitter and glam, and we’d be hard-pressed to think of a better excuse to turn up the volume on your style. Enter: Sequins!

Adding some sparkle is always a good idea, whether you’re going to an office party, dinner with friends, a cocktail party, or having a girls' night out.

The trick is figuring out how to wear sequins in a way that feels like the real you and not like you’re working the main stage at the Bellagio. Let’s break it down.

Frame your face.

The truth is, most social settings have you interacting with people from the waist up–that is to say, you’re milling about at a party (in a crowd, a sea of faces) or sitting at a dinner table (Waist. Up). A sequin top or jacket puts the glam up where people can see it, and it is more easily styled than you think.

Six to Sunday Tips:

  • #1. Let the glittery piece be the only shine in your ensemble. If you opt for a sequin blazer, keep the under-layer simple and shine-free (a barely-there cashmere sweater, shell, or even t-shirt works) and wear it with the black pants you already own. Keep jewelry to a minimum and makeup simple.
  • #2. Choose something that reflects your style. More classic? Try a simple sequin shell. More feminine? Go for a blouse with pretty puff sleeves.
  • #3. Look for classic colors like black, winter white, blush, burgundy, hunter green, and navy. Skip the brights–too young for you and we promise you, you’ll tire of them.

Bottoms up.

The stores are stocked with sequin pants, and if you’ve got great gams, go for them. You’ll find them in every iteration, from tux pants to leggings, but we’re particularly mad for sequin joggers as an unexpected (but no less dressy) alternative. Whatever shape or style you like, let the pants (or skirt) be the stand-out and pair them with a soft sweater, a tailored blazer, or a white, slightly oversized button-down.

Six to Sunday Tips

  • #1. Sequins make things appear larger (all that light reflection) so stick to a dark hue on the bottom.
  • #2. Try a monochromatic look for maximum chicness–like navy sequin pants with a navy cashmere sweater (insert “chef’s kiss” emoji here).
  • #3. Because the sparkle is down below, a statement earring won’t be overkill.
  • #4. Most sequin pieces come with a little pouch of extra sequin pieces. Butts on chairs mean more opportunities to “unseat” a few – be smart, and save the extras!

Amp up your accessory game.

If a sequin dress or blazer isn’t your speed, we see you. Baby steps are just fine, so add a clutch, a belt, or an embellished shoe (ahem, only one, not all of the above). Wear your accessory of choice with literally anything in your closet for that quick but subtle hit of sparkle.

This is also the easiest way to go from day to night–keep the sparkly accessory tucked away until it’s time for the event and BOOM, the party is on.

Six to Sunday Tips

  • #1. A cocktail shoe with jeans and a white blouse always looks fabulous
  • #2. Doing a sequin bag? Try it in a clutch, wristlet, or mini bag (they’re all the rage) but nothing too large. Please.
  • #3. This is the one place where sequins in a wowza color make sense and can be a lot of fun. Maybe not a neon hue, but everything else is fair game.

Go for it glam.

For those intrepid fashionistas who want to BRING IT, sequin-wise, here are a few pieces we’re looooving. Bold and blingy, they’ll turn any evening into a dance party.

Six to Sunday Tips

  • #1. Buy a matching sequin bottom and top. You can wear it together or mix it up and wear it to multiple events. The top can be worn with jeans or dressier slacks, and the skirt or pants with a white blouse.
  • #2. Experiment with sequins in a sophisticated print. Leopard and plaid are our two of-the-moment favorites.
  • #3. Splurge on a sequin piece just because you love it. If there is one thing we’ve learned by now it’s that we only have one life, and shine was born for having fun!
